Re Sisters of Sinai - they were proper lady travellers and it so sad that Cambridge Uni refused to acknowledge their achievements because they didn't grant degrees to women at the time. I thought it a very good book - just the physical side of their achievement was amazing, let alone the 9 or 10 languages they mastered along the way.skiourophilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08200877834536477400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488371842288429064.post-29181733258518947342012-05-16T11:22:12.931+09:302012-05-16T11:22:12.931+09:30Yecch! I would still like to hear your thoughts about the Sisters of Sinai, though -- real lady adventurers who bucked convention.Jennyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00251983804060081813noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488371842288429064.post-50981956141566408042012-05-15T17:09:54.779+09:302012-05-15T17:09:54.779+09:30Thanks Desperate Reader - the Sheik certainly seem...Thanks Desperate Reader - the Sheik certainly seemed to spawn a legion of sequels (to my eternal sadness I think I saw them all pop up in my Kindle recommendations before I came to my senses and stopped it using it as a recommendation!), so there must have been a perceived niche for this type of book. Again, I think of Fifty Shades at the moment (which I haven't read).skiourophilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08200877834536477400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488371842288429064.post-32598400179123727682012-05-15T01:35:57.353+09:302012-05-15T01:35:57.353+09:30The rape fantasy is appalling from our more libera...The rape fantasy is appalling from our more liberated point of view but I did somewhere read a convincing argument about it being a way that women could imagine having the sex they wanted without having to admit they wanted it. The ultimate passing on of responsibility. It still makes me uncomfortable.Desperate Readerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15708411387912078122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488371842288429064.post-4753623456724305782012-05-14T16:05:39.120+09:302012-05-14T16:05:39.120+09:30Thanks Danielle - tho' I'm wondering wheth...Thanks Danielle - tho' I'm wondering whether the _Fifty Shades of Grey_ phenomenon might not be putting us right back in our places!skiourophilehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08200877834536477400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8488371842288429064.post-13740992687182507192012-05-14T13:56:19.186+09:302012-05-14T13:56:19.186+09:30Sometimes it's nice to read books like this in...Sometimes it's nice to read books like this in order to simply appreciate just how far we've come and evolved! Have to say I love this quote: "a sort of Vaseline-tinged aura of Edwardian obfuscation which leaves almost everything to the imagination."Daniellehttp://danitorres.typepad.com/noreply@blogger.com
